What Causes Pain In Rib-cage Below Heart After Quintuple Bypass Surgery?

My husband had a quintuple 17 days ago, has been home for 11 days. He has been doing very well... walks 15 min increments 3x/day - eats well, is out of bed more than in bed........ Today he had a pain in his rib cage on his left side (below the heart). Its gone now. Is is normal to feel stitch -type pain in that area? This is the first time he s had anything like that.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, as there is Sternotomy performed during the procedure of Quintuple bypass surgery, it is quite obvious for having pain lower chest region around ribs.

* Following measures will help your husband better way

- local application of heating pad

- use of analgesic ointment or spray containing Capsaicin, Linseed oil, Menthol with diclofenac
- analgesic and anti inflammatory medicine such as diclofenac, ibuprofen or others as per the surgeon`s choice
- hygiene care of operated part
- control of blood sugar
-avoidance of weight bearing
- deep breathing exercises, meditations and YOGA
- continue rest of his cardiac medicines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
