What Causes Pain In Right Side Of Back And Tingling Sensation In Arms?
My husband (67 years old) has right pain in one are of his back (upper back) right side. There is one specific spot if I rub pain reliever topical on it (he says the pain level in that spot is a 6) . Any movement makes the pain worse. Some tingling down the arm periodically. They have done blood work, CT scans, (of the shoulder area), CT of the lungs - nothing other than arthritis. This pain came on suddenly. He has a history of heart problems (past endocarditis), severe lung disease COPD 4th stage, diabetes, has a pacemaker so cannot have an MRI. This has been going on for a month and is no better pretty much the same pain level?????

Pain in the right side of the back could be intercostal muscle strain or intercostal neuralgia causing tingling sensation in the arms. Get him all Nerve conduction tests done & clinically examined by a Neurologist. In the meantime rest & limit physical exercises. Take pain medications, acetaminophen or ibuprofen to reduce the pain and swelling. Application of hot & cold packs should be done under a physiotherapist. Injection of corticosteroids effectively reduce pain and swelling if other treatments fail. Stretch exercises should be done under a PT but should be stopped immediately if the pain increases & symptoms are not relieved.
