Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve been on a doctor monitored low carb high protein diet for about 7 weeks with great success . About 3 weeks ago I noticed my tail bone started hurting no matter where I sat or layed. Yesterday I woke up and had bad pain in my right ankle (front of ankle & top of foot) with no swelling. This morning I woke up and it was so bad I have to use a cane. I read on line that it may be gout do to my high protein diet.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM I have gone through your query. Gout is usually presented with swelling and reddish appearance. Mostly it will be on metacarpophalangeal joints of toe. Even ankle , knee or hip or hand joints can be involved. If you have such symptoms you can run a blood level of uric acid test. But if that is normal it can be most likely sciatica. An orthopedic examination followed by a x ray and MRI if needed will rule out that. In such case NSAIDs like ketoprofen , muscle relaxants like thiocolchicoside and neurotropic drugs might help you. If it is present for long term then i advise muscle strengthening exercises and physiotherapy. Hope this may help you. Let me know if you have any further query. Thanks.
