My daughter hurt her ankle while jumping up on boxes during athletics 5 days ago. The joint on the side of her foot swole up and bruised. The swelling went down after 2 days and now it is back and more pronounced and still bruised. When she ices it she is now getting a burning sensation in her toes. What should we do?

Hello,

I read your message carefully and understood your concern.

Five days ago your daughter hurt her ankle during athletics. The foot joint got swollen and bruised. Even though the swelling was reduced after two days now it is back again and more pronounced. Your daughter has a burning sensation on her toes when she ices the foot.

The burning sensation in your daughter's toes can be due to a damage in soft tissues of the foot. They injury may have caused nerve damage which develops these strange sensations.

The ankle got swollen let's say for the second time. Make sure that your daughter has not hurt her foot for the second time. Keep applying cooling compresses locally. A mixture of blended onion with coarse salt is advised to reduce swelling. Ask her not to move/not to be active for a few days, until totally recovered. Give ibuprofen or paracetamol for the inflammation and pain.

If the swelling won't subside after these measures, my advice is to see a doctor and run foot X-ray is a must needed to evaluate the damage. Doctor will prescribe medication to fight the inflammation.

Foot cooling and rehabilitation exercises will help to recover faster. After swelling is down, and still bruising, can apply heparin cream locally to dissolve the blood accumulated during the trauma.

Wish fast recovery.
