What Causes Pain In The Buttocks On The Right Side?

I have a dull, achy pain in my right buttock. Think it started last month when began to use a new piece of exercise equipment. The pain does not go down my leg. Both heat and ice relieve it, somewhat. It is not there 100% Was feeling a little better, but twisted on Monday, and it came back. Does not keep me awake, as it comes and goes. Is it a piriformis syndrome problem?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
Your painis not likely to be due to pyriformis syndrome.... for pyriformis muscle when irritates nearby sciatic nerve to cause sciatic pain going down the leg.
You seem to have muscle or hip joint strain due to unusual stress by new equipment.stress &inflammation of bursae aaround hip joint can also cause it.
*Rest.. hot &cold packs &anti inflammatory pills like Ibuprofen over the counter taken twice a day would mostly relieve it.
No relief indicates consultation of an orthopedic doctor.
Thanks
