What Causes Pain In The Ear And Jaw Along With Rash On The Forearm?

I ve been having pain in my left ear and also my jaw on the same side. I was talking to some people at the office a couple days later and they thought it sounded as if I had TMJ. I had never heard of that but I looked it up and it sounded like a possibility. I was taking ibuprofen and thought i d wait it out because I had a dentist appointment scheduled for 6/30. That was 2 weeks ago. Last Thursday I was getting tired of the pain and thought I should go see my doctor in case it s not a dental issue, so I went and he treated me for an ear infection, said I had fluid build up in my left ear. He put me on a strong antibiotic and it started feeling better in couple of days but it still felt funny where my jaw comes together back by my ear and after being on Cipro for a week it still has not cleared up and still hurts considerably sometimes when I first wake up. I have my dental appointment tomorrow after work, and I will tell him all about this, but I just don t know if this is a dental issue of something else. Am I on the right track? I also have a rash on my forearms but I have been treating it as poison ivy but maybe its something else. I am just looking for an opinion as to whether I should be pursuing medical attention or dental.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Noted your history about having ear pain on left side, thought of T M Joint arthralgia, Dentist says fluid built up in ear and treated accordingly.
What I wonder is you should have consulted an ENT instead.
Proper ENT check up will help to the exact cause and thus get treated properly with decongestant and anti-inflammatory medicines along with oral steroids if required.
The classical symptom of T M Joint (temporomandibular) arthralgia is painful chewing and if present then only we can say this to be due to TMJA. If so, then be on liquid diet only. Medicines are somewhat the same.
Do not blow nose.
It takes time of a few weeks for either of the problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
