What Causes Pain In The Finger Knuckle With Purple Discoloration On The Palm?

WhatI cut my finger with an extremely sharp clever type knife 2 days ago while cutting through a very hard sweet potato. The cut was deep and wouldn t stop bleeding. I had my husband drive me to the ER . they used silver nitrate on my wound to stop the bleeding as there was not enough tissue to pull together for stitches. I took out a indentation like part of the inside of my middle finger between the tip and my knuckle on my left hand. They shot my finger with nova cane or something like it and then cut off the circulation with a rubber band at the base of my finger using forceps. They also gave me a tetanus hot even though I had just received on in June of this year. My hand is throbbing with pain still today I have pain my knuckle and at the base of my finger there is a purpleish blue color spreading towards my palm. There is a constant ache in my finger where I cut it and tow extra strength tylenol won t even touch the pain at all. Normally If I am hurt that is all it takes to stop any pain u might be feeling. My ring finger on my left hand is becoming stiff and hard to bend as well.

Hello,

I want to confirm once that what was the depth of the cut? Did it cut the tendon? If not the tendon than not to worry much but if tendons are cut we need to take a different measure of treatment.

For now, since the cut is closed with stitches and now your major complains is about pain, stiffness and bluish discoloration of the skin. This will be present to post any wound Injury of the hand. We have to wait till the stitches are removed and even check if any nerve is damaged or not. In most cases, the nerves are not damaged and the healing takes about 3-4 weeks of time. Based on the physiology of your skin the wound healing might take up to 14-20 days of time.

For pain, I will advise using icing over the wrist region or the neck region. This may make the nerves numb and stops the pain sensation. Since pain sensation is carried by the nerves we need to desensitize it with external factors. Hope this should work.

For now, don't worry more about the bluish discoloration and stiffness as this will be taken care once the stitches are removed and wound starts healing. With physiotherapy, your movements can be achieved back but we need to check beforehand if any nerve is damaged or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
