I am an active healthy 45 year old woman of average weight. I sit at a desk and work on a computer during the day. My hands and feet are hurting during the night and especially in the mornings. My right hand becomes numb at night and throughout the day. The right side of my neck is also hurting around the spine. I m taking advil to reduce the pain during the day.

Hello,

Some of the causes which could cause such symptoms include

1. Thyroid disorders - mainly hypothyroidism. You could check your thyroid status including Thyroid stimulating hormone, T3 and T4 levels to rule out the same.

2. Diabetes mellitus- You need to get your blood sugar levels checked to rule out diabetes.

3. Dry skin- This could occur if you have a tendency of "Atopy" - an allergic tendency which could cause nasal allergies, asthma and dryness of skin either at present or in childhood.

4. Contact dermatitis- This is an allergy caused by touching some allergens and could occur if you are working with paints, cement, gardening ,etc.

However, it is more likely to cause itching on the hands alone and not both hands and feet.

5. Urticaria- This usually presents with hives, but could sometimes cause itching and burning alone. This response well to antihistamines like Benadryl at bedtime.

I would advise you to get your blood work done to rule out thyroid disorders and diabetes mellitus.

You could apply a calamine-based lotion or colloidal oatmeal based moisturizer (e.g- Aveeno) 2-3 times per day.

Do not wash your hands and feet for more than 2 times in a day. Excessive cleansing could make them drier and itchier.

You could take an antihistamine like Benadryl at bedtime for 15 days.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
