What Causes Pain In The Head After Removal Of A Mole?

I had a mole on my head removed about 8 years ago. It was just above and behind my ear, on the right side of my scalp. The mole was about .5 cm round. It was sent for biopsy and came back normal . Since then, I experience a periodic dull ache where the mole used to be, as though it s bruised. I asked my doctor about it recently and she mentioned trigeminal nerve pain, and didn t seem concerned. I don t agree as I believe the trigeminal nerve is more in front of the ear, not behind. Anyway. Any suggestions on why I feel this ache? It lasts a few minutes then will go away, and I feel it periodically...maybe 1-2 x a week. Should I be getting this looked at by a specialist? Thanks.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history well and understood the concerns.
Mole or removal of mole from the scalp behind ear usually does not cause pains that too after 8 years of surgical removal.
Hence the cause can be ascertained as per the history you have given.
If the pain is localized to the area wherein the surgery was done then this is due to entrapment of the small nerve in the scar tissue which can give the pain as you have well explained.
If the trouble is not much you can carry on without any specific treatment as such.
If the pain is severe and disabling or disturbs you, medications like Gabapentin, Amitriptyline can be tried.
If medications fail to give relief then a small surgery to remove the scar and re-stitch the area can help you forever.
Trigeminal neuralgia can not be this much local. But the treatment can be same irrespective of the cause.
Avoid stress and anxiety as these can instigate or enhance such pains.
Do not use hard combs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
