What Causes Pain In The Index Finger?

I am having a pain in my left index finder in the joint closest to the fingernail. It feels like something is tearing inside but only when I reach for something, and not every time. I am a computer worker, and mouse with my left hand. I have not had time to see my family doctor.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think that your symptoms are due to overuse. Some advices that I can give to you are:
1) Rest your fingers, hand, and wrist.
2Ice your fingers for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, once or twice an hour.
3) Consider taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to relieve pain and reduce swelling.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
