Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Pain In The Left Leg While Treating Bulging Disc In The L5-S1 Area?
The MRI recently done on me revealed a bulging disc, increasingly degenerating in the L5-S1 area of my spine. After the neurologist over the test results, he immediately asked about how I felt about having surgery down on my back. Since 2012 the degeneration noted from the MRI has greatly increased. I have constant pain and numbness on my left leg. My neurologist will perform an EMG to test my muscle nerves. (if I have that right). I assume the pain in my leg comes from the pinched nerve, from the bulging disc. My question is, should I get the surgery done right away (I understand it less invasive now and quick recovery) or should I go with steroid shots for temporary relief?

What Causes Pain In The Left Leg While Treating Bulging Disc In The L5-S1 Area?
Hi, You may try either but steroids are temporary and may have to be repeated and have their own side effects surgery is a one time procedure. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care. Regards, Dr. Harshita, Ophthalmologist
