What Causes Pain In The Left Shoulder While Coughing?

I have had pain in my left shoulder behind my scapula for about a week. I have now gotten a sore throat and cough, and the pain is very bad when I cough. Is it possible that I have some shoulder injury (I do a lot of physical activity) that is being exacerbated by the cough? I have complete range of movement but weakness on my left side (12 hours).

Hello,

This can be only bone (scapula) problem, neurological problem, chest problem. So, what I request you to do is, to have some tests:

1. Chest X-Ray (AP and PA)
2. MRI of Cervical spine
3. Complete Blood Test

Meanwhile, if there is a pain, please take Ibuprofen 300 mg every 6 hours if needed.

If pain persists or too much, take Tramadol 50 mg/day. For sore throat, you can do the followings:

1. drink ginger tea.
2. drink garlic water
3. drink honey tea or only honey every day
4. eat citrus food.
5. also can take multi-vitamin.

For cough, Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride: 50 mg orally every 6 hours as needed. Maximum can take 4 times/day.

After the reports come, we can decide, what to do with the shoulder. Meanwhile, do not attempt to do exercise. Rest must be taken.

Please post any further query and post another question with the results, any doctor can follow you up and can give the next course of treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
