What Causes Pain In The Legs And Arms While On Metformin?

I ve recently been diagnosed (again) for Type II Diabetes (I m almost menopausal -- still have a menses every other month -- and my age is 57). I ve been just pre-diabetic for years, but about three years ago when I first began blood pressure meds, I also flipped over the line into diabetes. With exercise and diet control, I brought it down for a couple of years but this summer I again was found over the line. My daily sugar levels on fasting were around 120 plus. I was put on Metformin (2000) and gradually increased from one pill to four over a month. My morning fasting blood sugar levels now range between 90 and the low 100s. I had some random dark urines (mostly in the AM) but nothing consistent and it went back to normal by my next urine. However, for the last week or so I ve woken about two hours before rising (4-6 AM) with aching in my long bones in my legs (my arms have a little of this but it is more noticeable in my legs). It is strong enough that it wakes me up and despite moving around I cannot get comfortable enough to go back to sleep. Ibuprofen helps but it doesn t go away completely. Is the Metformin the culprit?

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hi,

Diabetes itself can cause peripheral neuropathy so I would advise you to work with your doctors regarding that.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
