What Causes Pain In The Lower Abdomen With History Of Kidney Infection?

Hello Doctor, My low back started to ache last night, it prevented me from being able to fall asleep until I took 600mg of Advil. Today when I urinate there is a stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen. Last Summer I experienced a kidney infection that was not preceded by a UTI, does this seem like a similar situation to you? Thank you for your assistance, Lindy Venustus

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Urinary tract infection is the most probable cause for the back ache and lower abdominal pain. Urinary tract starts from kidney followed by ureter, the tube connecting the kidney to the urinary bladder and the urethra. The ascending infection of the urethra may extend up to kidney causing radiating pain in the back, loin and in the lower abdomen.

Urinary tract infection is usually presented as frequent urination with small amount of urine, increased frequency, urgency, high coloured urine, painful urine, fever, chills, etc. Advil, ibuprofen is an NSAID for pain relief. Antibiotics are advised to cure the infection, if present. Bladder involvement causes lower abdominal pain. I suggest urine routine and ultrasonogram of abdomen and pelvis to detect organ of involvement. Consult the physician early for effective management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
