What Causes Pain In The Lower Back And Abdomen?

Hello. My husband has some painful issues and we can t find a solution. He is 42 years old, height 5 9 , weight approx 215. He has lower and mid back pain, stomach pain almost all the time, feels overly full when he eats, stomach is distended after he eats and has had weight gain. This has been going on for over a year. He takes Prilosec and Pepsid daily. He had a abdominal ultrasound to check his gall bladder and they did not find any gall stones. He had a Hida scan and they said they don t see any problems there either. He hurts every day and has a hard time getting comfortable sleeping in bed. What do you think is the problem? Thank you! General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your husband and understood the concerns. It seems that the problems started with abdomen that i pain, feeling full on eating , distension and not even getting comfortable sleep in bed for the last one year in spite of taking Prilosec and Pepcid daily.

This in turn gives the back pain as you have explained. The cause of the symptoms may not be due to gall stone problems. The commonest causes I can think of are as follows:

IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome. Entero-colitis. Any specific disease like tuberculosis of abdomen and so on. Hence I would advise him the following in such a situation:

CT scan of abdomen. Colonoscopy, Tests of stool, blood and urine. Any other tests after clinical evaluation, examination by a General Surgeon or a Gastroenterologist. All these things will lead to an appropriate diagnosis and gives plan for proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
