What Causes Pain In The Lower Back And Buttocks?

Hello, My 40 yr old son was in the ER last week and they did at CT scan of his abdomen, he was complaining of lower back pain that radiated down and around into both buttocks and down into both legs which was also burning. Sounded like neuropathy to me. He has recently been having high blood pressure and high blood sugar, however, his PCP has yet to put him on medicine for either. He has mentioned putting him on Amlodipine and Medformin. The CT scan showed that my son has fatty liver. He is not a drinker, he does need to lose about 25 lbs. Heart disease and diabetes runs on both sides of the family. His father has had 6 heart attacks and high blood sugar, is obese. I have a stent in my heart for a hereditary congenital condition, no high BP, Hypoglycemic and my weight is on the low side.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It can be secondary to diabetes & overweight your son has resulted in diabetic neuropathy & possible lumber spondylosis.

Leading to his symptoms. He needs getting his diabetes under control /supplementation with vitamin B12 /CT scan or MRI of his lumbar spine to know about his spine &get specific treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
