What Causes Pain In The Lower Back Radiating To The Knee?

I have a pain in my lower back radiating around to the front and down my quad to my knee. With that the bone in my butt hurts and I cannot lift my leg up to tie shoe. The quad feels very sore. I do have arthritis and bursitis in my hips but this came literally overnight. I woke up with this pain. I have alternated ice and heat with no relief.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Lower back pain that's radiating down towards knee likely indicates issue related to nerve compression in the lumbar spine.

There are different reasons for it like trauma, accidental injury to the back, due to degeneration of the discs.

I would suggest you get an MRI spine done to find out the exact cause behind the pain.

Take the scan reports to your doctor and once the cause is known, your doctor will guide you further on pain management with appropriate medicines.

If necessary he might ask you to get some other diagnostic tests to know the underlying cause.

Till then I suggest you take rest and painkillers like ibuprofen might give some relief from pain. Visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
