What Causes Pain In The Lower Back Radiating To The Leg?

Hi, I have been having lower back pain for about 3 months now. It is the worse first thing in the morning. Stretching does not help and yesterday the pain was in the lower left side at first but then it spread around my left side at the belt line and then down the inside of my left leg to just above the knee. It was more of an ache then. Never had this before. I took 2 Aleve and also 1 Tylenol about 3 hours later I got thru the day but standing was hard. Today I was fine at first but once I was on my feet awhile it started again but not as severe.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

As per your symptoms, according to my assessment, you have sciatica. It is a nerve pain that originates from back and then radiates to lower limbs.

Along with physical therapy you can take medications like Diclonac-MR that acts both for muscle relaxation and pain reliever.

In more severe pain, you may request your physician to prescriber narcotic painkillers like Vicodin.

If the symptoms are too troublesome, you can talk to your doctor for proper diagnosis and henceforth, a steroid injection into the area around the involved nerve root.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Maninder, General & Family Physician
