What Causes Pain In The Mouth After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Hi Doc! I m a patient with Crohn Disease since 5 Years...I take purinethol (immunomodulator)...I had my wisdom tooth extracted since 5 days but due to my case I was not given antibiotics so as not to interfere with purinethol...I can t neither open my mouth nor swallow without pain especially when eating... Is it normal that such symptoms continue to the 5th day? Will I recover soon? N.B. I wash my mouth day and night each 3 to 4 hours with warm salt water and I had my tooth rechecked and the doc said it s OK...So would it take too long to start eating without pain? thanks in advance for giving me a response

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Yes, pain after 5 days of wisdom tooth extraction is not abnormal and can last for about a week to ten days post extraction but should gradually become less severe..
So do not worry about it.
As of now you should do warm saline gargles, do cool compresses over the cheek and do antiseptic mouthwash gargles..
Take a soft diet and avoid stress..
You should also avoid NSAID painkillers and take any medication only after consent of your Physician..
In case if there is no improvement in next 5 days also then you should consult your Dentist and get evaluated as causes like Dry Socket has to be looked for..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
