Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Pain In The Nipples After Taking Metoprolol?
My wife started taking Metoprolol Tabs 25mg (1/2 in AM and the other 1/2 PM) about 3 weeks ago. She has experienced some of the side effects, that are listed, but 2 days ago her nipples started hurting. She wondered if this medication affected the hormones. She is scheduled to see her cardiologist on 5-23-17. He had taken her off of Flecainide and a couple of weeks later prescribed this Med. She was diagnosed with SVT, in 1999 and had been taking Flecainide since then. She is 87 years old.
It is a very rare finding in studies for beta-blockers (which include Metoprolol) to affect the breast and cause pain. So the answer is "yes", the nipple pain can be caused by Metoprolol as a very rare side effect of it. On the other hand I would recommend your wife to see your doctor first and rule out more common causes of breast pain.
To conclude:
- the nipple pain your wife is experiencing can be caused by Metoprolol
- still it is safer for her to see her doctor and rule out other more common causes of breast pain.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Zotaj Antoneta, General & Family Physician
