What Causes Pain In The Rib Cage While Breathing?

My hubby fell cross country skiing, he landed on his back and his breath was taken away. The muscle running down the back from his shoulder blade down to his kidneys hurts. Sharp pains occur by the ribs/kidney area. Pain when he breathes in deep. What do we do?? Could he have a kidney injury??
