What Causes Pain In The Ribcage On The Right Side?

Pain is mostly on lower right at the end of my ribcage and gets worse when i sleep. It is also on the left side but that has subsided mostly. The right side pain was bad last week but every morning i wake up with pain no matter how i sleep. Harder to sleep on that side.

Hi,

It would be very helpful if you could help me with more about the character of the pain like:
1) Course: increases with food or any particular movement.
2) Any other associated symptoms like diarrhea, gastritis, constipation, any breathing issue or any chest muscle localized tenderness, etc.
3) What is your age?
4) Is it the first time you are facing the issue?
5) Have you done any cardiac exercise or any heavy lifting?
6) Do you have any habits like smoking or alcohol?
7) Do you have any previous health issues like asthma or any other thing or any medications?

So leaving the missing part of your question, I can help you in brief giving you a clear idea to the matter. Our chest contains many organs like heart, lungs with its pleural covering, esophagus, muscles, ribs, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels.

Chest pain is broadly classified into:
1. Cardiac origin
2. Non-cardiac origin.
Any chest pain, no matter what, is first evaluated with an ECG to r/o any cardiac causes. Then comes the non-cardiac, if ECG comes normal without any classical symptoms. Causes are:
1. Costochonritis: It is the inflammation of upper rib cage to adjoining cartilage to sternum or breastbone. It is the most common cause of chest pain in children and adolescents. It may be associated with flu-like symptoms. The pain usually starts over the left side of the chest and worsen while taking a deep breath. The treatment is basically NSAIDs with muscle relaxants and rest and mild stretch exercises.
2. Lung conditions: Like pleuritic chest pain, pneumonia, lung abscess, pneumothorax, etc. It can only be diagnosed by doing a proper physical examination by a doctor and a x-ray. The treatment will be accordingly.
3. The chest pain is also commonly present in digestive tract disorders like IBS, gastritis. So, if you have any gastritis symptoms and old gastritis issue, then it can be a cause to it.
4. Muscle sprain: If you have recently done any heavy exercise or any heavy object lifting, then it’s likely that you may have developed muscle sprain. It can be treated with mild stretch exercise and NSAIDs with muscle relaxants and home therapies.

Any of the above reasons can be a cause to your pain. So, it is better that you visit a doctor in clinic instead of delaying much.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anuradha Das
