What Causes Pain In The Shoulders?

I am 58 years old and I have pain in my shoulder that started 2 months ago. My doctor says in may be from my rotater cuff and set up a MRI because he wanted to see the tendons. He said that an xray would not show him anything. My insurance says that I have to have an xray to see if a MRI is necessary. Will an xray show anything or would this just be a waste of tome and money?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As far as X-ray is concerned it will not exactly show the muscle bulk or any soft or connective tissue, and it will be difficult for doctors to comment in your case so they again will prescribe you MRI. But, MRI will do all muscle, soft, and connective tissue in detail and then you would not be prescribed something above that. So, it's good to do MRI rather X-ray.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ruby
