What Causes Pain In The Sternum Area?

My husband is having pain in the center front chest area and pressure in the corresponding area in his back, he keeps trying to burp it out and says if he could just swallow it he d feel better. He can t sleep because of it. It had been happening sometimes after eating or while eating. It does make him feel nauseous. There are no other heart attack symptoms. I think we should go to the ER but he won t. He does suffer from Ulcerative Colitis, which is under control, & in remission. He has a fatty liver. Also. Help! It is 3:30 am.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I agree with you that he should be seen because even though he believes it may be gas, heart disease has to be ruled out.

If ruled out then he may want to see if there are any particular foods that provoke this symptom- spicy foods, acidic foods, carbonated drinks, foods that are associated with increased gas production such as- turnips, beans, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
