What Causes Pain In The Sternum?

I feel foolish even writing this question. Female, 72 years of age. Little needle-like pain, high on left side of sternum. It is momentary. If I were young, I would say that it was like a stitch pain, for which one converts to shallow breathing until it goes away.

@ Seems related to costochondral pain in relation to some ligament insult ,
occasionally underlying pericardial irritation , rib pathology with nerve
trapping , diaphragm , stomach pathology others .
