What Causes Pain In The Thumb And Wrist?

My right thumb hurts all the way to the wrist. It is very painful and I can t use it to do a lot of things such as leaning on that hand, brushing my teeth, waving or shaking... I think it is due to a heavy bag that I carry on my shoulders and I pull it with my thumbs without thinking. I think it might have been too heavy at some point.... my wrist is swollen and painful to the touch. Is it a tendonitis? or a fracture? I try not to use that hand but many times I forget....

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to the carpal tunnel syndrome. I suggest to use anti-inflammatory medications such as Naproxen to relieve the pain. I also suggest gentle stretching exercises for relieve. Cold compresses can also help in relieving the pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
