What Causes Pain In The Thumbs?

My thumb on both hands closes against my finger and I have to pull it back. It is somewhat painful but mostly makes it difficult to grasp things. does not happen all the time but sometimes makes it difficult to hold and use knives and forks to eat. I do not use my hands much to work or use computer, but seems to occur after I have done small chores like gardening. I am 76 years old. Sometimes other fingers will do likewise.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It's possible if via have pressed too long in that region and hence the pain. Another possibility is arthritis of the base of the thumb joint.

Do get an Xray of the thumb joint. Get a 2D Doppler study of the vessels in your arm to look for any vascular compression causing the coldness.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
