What Causes Pain In The Upper Thigh Radiating To Knee?

I have gradually been having pain in my outer upper thigh near my hip and it seems to radiate to the inside of my knee and is making it difficult to walk because of the pain. I do not have much pain in those areas except upon walking. I am 67 years old and have had two lower back laminectomies in the past. I have also had abnormal gait for the past 5 or 6 years, as if I am not walking correctly on my left foot. I have been diagnosed with hip arthritis a couple of years ago.
