What Causes Pain In The Waist On The Lower Left Side?

I started having pain on my lower lef side of my waistline i believe close to my hip bone. The pain spread around to my outer left thigh from the top to above my knee. The skin is tight and inflamed and warm to the touch. At times it has a tingling pain and is worse at times. I went to urgent care the other day and they gave me a shot in the rear and put me on a prednislone pack with Flexiril for the pain. I also received Naproxen which I was told not to take until I am finished with the Medrol pack. The problem is that most of the pain is in my left thigh and very painful. I am planning on going back to my doctor tomorrow but didn t know if I need to go to emergency.

General Surgeon 's  Response
In all probability you are having acute sciatic nerve compression pain. An MRI of your lumbar spine is advised to see for any disc prolapse, and nerve compression. Also you may please get you nerve conduction study done which shall also support the diagnosis. The initial management in such a case is with bed rest, to lie flat on your back on a firm mattress, till good relief of the pain. You may take pain killers like Brufen tablet, one tablet, two or three times a day after food for 3 to 5 days. After pain has subsided, you shall have to undergo physiotherapy exercises to increase flexibility of the lower back. Yoga is also good. In chronic cases or severe nerve compression, minimal access surgery to remove the prolapsed disc is done.
