What Causes Pain In Throat After Using CPAP Machine?

I ve been using a cpap machine for years without serious problems. This morning my voice was normal when I awakened. I removed the cpap tubing and several minutes later I had a sharp pain in the back of my throat and then laryngitis, first scratchy and then (and now) no voice at all. No fever and no pain. Chamomile tea and Hall s lozenges don t help. Any thoughts? Thanks, Len

Good Morning Len,
I certainly do have some thoughts and sincerely hope they help. You did not mention whether you have a full face mask or not, but mouth breathing is one of the commonest reasons for the throat feeling scratchy and then the laryngitis. Are you using a chin strap or a full face mask? If you have gained or lost any weight it might affect the seal and fit. Then, many CPAP machines come with a humidifier attachment. If you do not have one, you may need one, but it must be ordered by the doc. Next, you can try using an over the counter spray, mouthwash or toothpaste named Biotene which is marketed for dry mouth. Spray, brush teeth, uses Biotene (not prescribing but I don't know any other brand) all before putting the secure mask on. Do it again when you wake up. Pay attention to the humitidy, wt. gain/loss and fit. Then, upon follow-up with your doctor present the problem if it persists. It could be a cold, perhaps you are prematurely concerned. Have a GREAT DAY!
