Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Pain In Throat And Sternum While Deep Breathing?
Hello! I m a 36 yr. old female. About a week ago, I started experiencing pain in my lower throat and sternum when breathing deeply. Also seemed SOB, but was probably just my imagination. That symptom has remained, along with stabbing pains in upper diaphragm (by ribs) occasionally. Pain in throat and sternum worsens when I lay down. It s an aching pain. I also have painful gassy, burpy feelings. I take synthroid and armour (began 6 months ago) and also just started a vitamin and supplement regimine about 8 days ago. Is it GERD? Ulcer? Esophigitis?
Sometimes, GERD is due to ulcer. Take boiled food for a couple of days. Avoid spicy, oily food. Take antacids or PPIs, to get relief and control symptoms of gastritis, bloating or indigestion. Take liver tonics to help digest food faster and for liver health. You are suggested to get liver function tests and endoscopy done to detect any liver dysfunction and ulcer (peptic / esophageal).
Since you are having chest pain on deep breathing, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get required tests done to rule out asthma, pneumonia, pleural effusion, viral infection, COPD, etc. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
