What Causes Pain In Upper Back And Chest While Treating Stomach Infection?

In 2006 I was diagnosed with a Hiatus Hernia and Stomach infection (HPylori) I got treated for it (anibiotics and Neium) It went away. On December 31st 2014I came down with the Chikungunya virus...I think with all the pain meds my stomach is a mess...the last thing I experienced with ChikV was chest pains...well I suffered with Chikv for 8 weeks (ending February).. well for the past few days I have been experincing excrucitaitng chest/upper back pains extending into my my arms and throat. Today was just horribel...I saw 2 Doctors today....One leaned towards heart even though my ECG was good..hes thinking unstable angina...The other is treating my stomach....would like to hear your thoughts

Hello,

Your symptom of excruciating upper back and chest pain may be due to the following reasons:
1) Gastroesophageal reflux disease and gastric ulcer
2) Thoracic outlet syndrome
3) Presence of a cervical rib
4) Mediastinum tumors
5) Upper thoracic and cervical spondylitis
6) Thyroid swelling
7) Unstable angina
8) Dissecting aortic aneurysm

The above conditions have to be ruled out by history taking, clinical examination and tests necessary. For pain relief you can have NSAIDs ibuprofen or opioid like Oxycodone or Hydrocodone.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Yes. I also agree with the other doctors. That kind of pain it is more suggestive of heart or stomach problems. The lungs are less possible to be. I recommend you to continue the treatments you are already taking and see how it goes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Jolanda Nikolla, Pulmonologist
