What Causes Pain In Upper Back While Coughing And Prolonged Shortness Of Breath?

67 yrs old, Pain in my left upper back, hurts when I cough, trouble sleeping, i am an asthmatic and usually do not have prolonged shortness of breath. I am not wheezing right now but i have trouble taking a deep breath for tthe last several days. Feel clammy and nauseous on and off, more acid re-flux problems lately, Terry

Hello welcome to HCM. Your symptoms indicates of three possibilities. First it may be just simple chest muscle spasms. For this plain analgesics will relieve the symptoms. Second is You may be having acidity. More acid is produced in the stomach which is splashing up towards oesophagus which is present behind chest, hence you are feeling sensation. It will be burning type and this sensation also felt in the neck. For this you have to take proton pump inhibitors like omez-40mg once daily half an hour before break fast. Every day for ten days. All the problems will be relieved in early. Third cause is symptom related to heart. pain will be like some wight is there on the chest. sweating will be there. I am sorry for sugesting an investigation. but to confirm getting ECG is must. Then take advice from the physician. Take care. good health.
