What Causes Pain In Wrist With History Of Carpal Tunnel Surgery?
Hello I had carpal tunnel operation 2 months ago and I still have pain, especially in the wrist and shooting pains that go up to the elbow. At night I wake up with even more pain. This is my left hand and due to this I am compensating with my right hand more now that hand is giving me pins and needles and goes numb. I am still on light duties at work only four hour shifts.
Painful pins and needles sensation in the wrist up to the elbow is commonly due to irritation as the wound heals. Pain is felt at the incision site or at the thicker parts of the palm, called the thenar and hypothenar eminence and may extend to the elbow. The pain and numbness may go away right after surgery or may take several months to subside. Try to avoid heavy use of your hand for up to 3 months.
Continue to take the medicines that you have been prescribed by the treating doctor and get follow up examinations done to confirm no post operative complications. Your doctor will remove the bandage when required, do not do it yourself. He will tell you if you need a wrist splint.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
