What Causes Pain On The Right Side Of The Body Upon Coughing?
My 84 year old husband has a sharp pain in his right side when he coughs and when in the process of sitting down or getting up. He does have pulmonary hypertension, but doesn t seem to have pain in the lungs, just the sharp pain in the right side. The pain subsides after he is seated or done coughing. I am considering taking him to an Emergency Room to check it out. Do you have any recommendations or advice? Thank You. My email address is YYYY@YYYY . We are about 35 minutes from Waterloo.
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Pain on coughing and even breathing can come from inflammation of the covering around the lung (pleuritis). There are a number of causes but a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that you can buy over the counter may help, that is ibuprofen or diclofenac. A clot in the lung may also cause this symptom so it is best to see a doctor to exclude this.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
