What Causes Pain On The Right Side Of The Head And Behind The Ear?

This is the 3rd time in 2 months that I have woken up with a pain on the right side of my head behind my ear. There is a swollen blood vessel from the upper part of my ear that runs to the top of my head. It hurts without touching it and is beyond painful to the touch.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to occipital neuralgia. It can be due to arthritis in the neck and shoulders.

Occipital neuralgia can cause pain and throb in your neck, in the back or on one side of your head, and behind the ear.

I suggest doing an X-ray of the neck and shoulder for further evaluation. Meanwhile, I suggest using anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen to relieve the pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
