What Causes Pain Radiating From The Feet To The Ankle?

My fiance has this pain that radiates from the bottom of his foot to his ankle over the last month. He describes the pain as a shock like you would get from the carpet (a surge of electricity) , but 10x worse. This started as a few second thing however is now lasts 1-3 minutes.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. there are quite a few causes which can manifest as pain in the feet and radiation to ankle. I will tell you few of them-

1. Pinched nerve- Also known as nerve entrapment, a pinched nerve can occur at various regions of the foot. A nerve entrapment is frequently caused by trauma, such as pressure created by swelling, excess pressure from a tight shoe, or blunt trauma.

Nerve entrapment may cause shooting, burning pain, or sensitivity on the top of the foot. Nerve entrapment on the top of the foot may be due to excess pressure on the nerve from a tight shoe.

Treatment- Cortisone shots and anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to treat.

Other type of conservative treatment- padding the shoe in areas where the foot is being compressed (often at the top of the shoe) or orthotics to correct the abnormal foot structure or function causing the nerve irritation.
If conservative measures fail, surgery may be required to release the nerve.

2. Daibetic neuropathy. Kindly ask your fiance to get blood sugars tested.

3. other less common causes-
i. Physical trauma, such as after surgery or an accident
ii. Drugs such as certain antiviral drugs, or antibiotics
iii. Liver or kidney disease
iv. Vitamin deficiencies
v. A herniated disc in the lumbar spine
vi. Infectious diseases, such as complications from Lyme disease or viral infections

At this point of time i suggest your fiance to consult an orthopedician. The doctor will take an xray or if required suggest to get an MRI. He should get better with treatment then.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
