What Causes Pain Under The Breast Bone?

Gallbladder ultrasound was negative. Doctor was very surprised. Still thinks it s gallbladder. Pain in the middle and to the right under breastbone. Indegestion and chest pain. Right side pain and thru to the back. What else can be done? Is it possible the ultrasound wasn t correct? Or does it just mean there are no stones?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pain or discomfort under the breast bone is commonly caused due to Costochondritis but it can also be due to some type of chest injury, an infection, developing heart disease or simply gastritis. Take antacids, diet high in fiber, plenty of water, soups, juices to avoid constipation. Take PPI's like PAN - 40 (Pantoprazole.)

Avoid spicy & oily food, avoid addictions if any. However, visit the ER, get evaluated for Costochondritis, get done all Lipid function tests, CBC, Urinalysis, Ecg, Echo to rule out any developing cardiac problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K,
