What Causes Pain Under The Rib Cage On The Right Side?

My 17 year old son woke Monday morning feeling sick--went to football practice that night then spiked a fever over 102. Was complaining of pain on his right side, under ribs below chest. Pain has increased to the center of his chest and it feels tight. He has asthma and says this is different than an asthma attack. Could this be pleurisy?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor service'.
I have read your question and here is my advice.

This pain can be for man reasons, this can be an infection, i.e., pleutsity, especially if there is fever with this, but this may also be a muscular pain, uncommonly this can be a very minute pneumothorax, (i.e., small hole in the lung) in patients with asthma. So at the moment he can use some pain killer like Iburprofen, but I would personally like to get his X-ray of the chest done to know about the cause. It becomes necessary for patient who developed fever, and who has already a lung disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
