What Causes Pain Under Thighs When Having Titanium Rod In Leg?

Hello, 15 years ago I had a car accident and shattered my left femur. They placed a titanium rod, two screws, and two pins in my leg. Just in the last two years I have severe shooting, stabbing pain that comes out of nowhere around the general area of the break but on the under side of my thigh. It only last a second and then goes away but it s happening more frequently. I ve had x-rays done and a bone scan and the ortho dr says everything is fine and in place and can t tell me what s causing the pain. My questions are what could be causing the pain? Could I safely have the rod removed after 15 years? I m 30 years old now and need to find out what the problem is. Thanks!
