What Causes Pain Upon Rubbing Eye And Discomfort While Blinking After Injury?

I had a branch poke me in the eye 6 weeks ago - it was very painful but there was no blood or visible marks on my eye. My vision was a bit funny for about 10 minutes directly after the branch, but then went back to normal. After 6 weeks my eye is still painful if I rub it and sometimes a bit scratch when I blink. Is this OK? l

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You had a branch poke your eyes 6 weeks ago. Now you feel pain on rubbing the eyes. Presently you have normal vision. Such symptoms are commonly caused due to corneal abrasion, irritation, smoke or smog, exposure to chemicals, or even too much sun. Inadequate lubrication of the eye and inadequate sleep and rest may cause such symptoms. You are suggested to avoid exposure to sunlight. Give adequate rest to your eyes, do not touch, rub or irritate your eyes.

Do not wear contact lens but protect your eyes by wearing glasses. Cold compress may help. You can apply Refresh tear eye drops to relieve dry eyes. Take analgesics, acetaminophen, one SOS when needed to ease pain. Get clinically examined by an eye specialist, you may need antibiotic eye drops (Ciplox / Genticyn eye drops). Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
