I've had really itchy hands and feet, I went into the hospital earlier and they said i probably have Cholestasis. But my right side hurts like where my liver is. Im really worried because Im 34 weeks pregnant. Should i wait until my appointment tomorrow or go back in?
I understand your concern and will do my best to answer your question. Right upper quadrant (or liver) pain is not uncommon during pregnancy and is usually due to gall bladder stones or cholestasis. That pain can be very uncomfortable but usually is harmless for the pregnancy. I usually make sure that the blood pressure and urine are ok to make sure you don't have preeclampsia (also known as toxemia or pregnancy induced hypertension) and do liver and pancreatic tests and an ultrasound to make sure. There is not much we can do for cholestasis or gall bladder stones expect advise you to avoid any fatty or fried foods: it is very unusual for someone to need their gallbladder removed in the third trimester. Usually I advise people to go back to the emergency room if the pain gets a lot worse or if you have headaches, blurred or double vision, shortness of breath or sudden swelling of the hands or feet. I hope that helps and best of luck with the pregnancy and delivery
