What Causes Pain While Putting On My Retainer At Night?
Hi I usually wear a retainer because I had braces and I forgot to wear it to bed one night. I put it in when I went to bed the following night and it started immediately hurting. I took it out and haven t put it back in but the pain won t ease up and it s been a few days. It s so sore it s reduced me to tears. Please help!
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems that your retainer is either having any sharp edges over the retainer plate or the wire has disfigured that might be causing impingement over the mucosa causing it traumatised, torn and ulcerated and due to this there is inflammation and pain..
I would suggest you to consult your Orthodontist and get your retainer checked so that in case if there is any sharp elevations in the retainer late they can be trimmed and if the wire is disfigured then it can be adjusted accordingly..
A new retainer can also be fabricated if the old one is not successively corrected..
As of now avoid wearing the retainer and you can apply numbing gel containing Lignocaine over the mucosa and also do cool compresses over it.. Take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
