What Causes Pain While Swallowing And Painful Hiccups Post Eating?
Hi, I get very painful hiccups soon after I begin eating. It almost feels like something is stuck. Stuck just below the bottom of my throat, in my chest area. I have to drink a few swallows of anything liquid to make the hiccups stop and relieve the pain. The process of swallowing the liquids is very difficult and also painful. But once it feels like the blockage is cleared - everything is fine. I am a 51 yr old woman and this has happened as far back as ai can remember. There were a few years in my early adulthood when this didn t happen. Then one day I was drinking a coke and the soda got stuck in my chest area. Very painfully stuck. It has happened consistently since then. Thank you for your time

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nureini's Response
Hi dear,
Based on the symptoms you have mentioned above both Achalasia and reflux esophagitis are possible. however because you said you had these symptoms for long time then it's more likely Achalasia
Achalasia leads to the symptoms you mentioned above, also check if you have heartburn and weight loss.
It's best that you make an appointment with a Gastroenterologist to make the necessary tests to confirm. The Doctor will give you barium swallow test and Manometry of the esophagus.Endoscopy might be done depending on your signs and symptoms...
Wishing you all the best
