Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having pain when swallowing. Especially sticky foods or if eating or swallowing too fast. Had an EGD today and the tortuous esophagus was found and they did a dilation. I would appreciate knowing more about the causes of the problem. Thank you.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Difficulty while swallowing is caused by a number of conditions like esophageal spam, growth in the esophageal or in pharynx etc. A esophgoscopy and barium swallow is required to seen the status of esophagus. Tortuous or cork-screw shaped esophagus is seen in esophageal spasm. The pressure at the end of esophagus also needs to be measured. If the pressure is high, esophageal is confirmed. The cause of the condition is not known. The condition is managed with muscle relaxants. Consult your primary healthcare provider for further management and prescription of medication.
