Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My left tonsil is red but I do not see any white spots. It used to hurt if I swallowed. The pain of swallowing went down after a few days but it hurts a little more now. A couple days before it started to hurt, I swallowed a chip and it may have scratched my throat or something because it hurt until it went down. Could that be the reason why or do I probably need tonsil surgery or could it be something else?
Swollen, red tonsils with other symptoms like difficulty in swallowing are acute tonsillitis which is mostly due to viral infection (adenovirus, rhinovirus) or some times bacterial (streptococcus, staphylococcus etc) or spitocheatas etc.
It is unlikely due to swallowing the chip and it scratched the tonsils. I do not think so this could be the possibility.
The treatment is mainly antibiotics (macrolides or quinolones or amoxycillin etc) with analgesic, antiinflammatories and antihistamines with mast cell stabilizers and other symptommatic drugs for 5 to 7 days.
If there is chronic infection of tonsils then surgical removal should be done.(tonsillectomy).
So,consult ENT specialist for complete medical history, examination with relevant investigations and full course treatment.
