Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a swollen ankle for six months with no precipitating event. Diagnosis was sprain or gout. I wore a brace as well as a boot and the ankle still remains swollen, and painful . I have has 3 xrays and blood work for uric acid. Everything is normal. Do you know what it could be.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Sprain of ankle is characterized by swelling and pain in the ankle joint. Sprain is manage by resting the ankle and immobilizing the ankle in brace or cast. Sprain occurs due to rupture of ligaments around ankle joint. Inadequate immobilization can result in persistence of swelling and pain. Gout is characterized by elevated uric acid. Gout often causes precipitation of uric acid crystals or tophi in the 1st digit of foot. Since, blood uric acid is normal, possibility of gout is unlikely. Inadequate healing of ruptured ligaments is more likely. Thus, I suggest you to consult your orthopedician for clinical assessment and thus management.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
