What Causes Painful Bruising On Hand After Injury?

I hit the top of my hand on the corner of a wooden table. It immediately bruised and it hurts quite a bit. I can move my hand, however any touch near or on that location is dreadful. I put ice on it directly and have been doing so, since. Do I need to be worried about breaking something? It is a burning and sometimes piercing pain then continued dull pain.
