What Causes Painful Cough?

Hi. I've had a bad cough for the last week or so.. getting better. but woke up 2 days ago with a pea size bump in my tongue..(middle left) Feel it more on the bottom. You can't see it.. and there are no lesions. i had coughed so much that night..and ALL night.. could i have hurt myself because all of the coughing? Pulled a muscle/nerve/busted a vein? I'm a 39 year old woman and don't smoke.. quit 10 years ago. Do not drink and am healthy. I'm 5' 8" and weigh about 125lb..

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, your chest pain is mostly due to musculoskeletal pain due to excessive coughing.
Coughing actually involves ribs, diaphragm, intercostal muscles etc.
When someone is having excessive coughing, all these have to work more and so after sometime they started paining.
So proper treatment of cough is must to reduce pain.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system to rule out bronchitis and lung infection.
You may need inhaled treatment and higher antibiotics.
Along with cough treatment, do following things for chest pain.
Avoid movements causing pain. Avoid bad postures in sleep. Apply warm water pad on affected areas. Take painkiller like ibuprofen.
Don't worry, you will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
