What Causes Painful Cuts On The Palms And Knuckles?

My hands are covered with little cuts on the back and at the knuckles, and more painful are the many small cuts on my palms from the cold dry weather. I m using a steroid cream from dermatologist at night, but it s still agony to do anything with my hands. It happens every year but this year seems exceptionally bad. We have 2 humidifiers going. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If the cuts are purely from the dryness and not typical of an allergic eczema, I would suggest stopping the steroid cream for a while as this thins out the skin. Moisturize your hands with an emulsifying ointment or E 45 after each hand wash and apply a thick layer at night and cover hands with gloves to contain the moisture. Alternatively warm coconut oil can be applied to affected areas. Avoid harsh detergents. Get well soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Felicia Manickam
